The Step into Sport programme focuses on young people aged 14-19, giving them opportunities to become involved in sports leadership and volunteering and contributes to their local community by volunteering to help at a quality local sports club.
The programme is funded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and co-ordinated by the Youth Sport Trust and Sport England. It aims to create greater volunteer links between schools and sports clubs.
Kay Turner manages the South Norfolk School Sport Partnership Step into Sport programme. Kay supports young people to gain valuable volunteering experiences and reward them for their hard work. The young leaders are supported to undertake placements both in their school and within their local community. The aim is to support the volunteers to develop key life skills, gain new skills, knowledge, self confidence and qualifications.
School based volunteering
School based volunteering is aimed at young people aged between 14-16 years who are actively involved in volunteering within a school environment.
Community based volunteering
Community based volunteering is aimed at young people aged between 16-19 years who have undertaken some leadership training previously. This is usually in the form of a leadership or NGB award. Hours can be accumulated from a variety of volunteering experiences in the community.
Different ways of volunteering
All young leaders taking part in the programme have the opportunity to have their achievement recognised. This will be in the form of a series of Step into Sport Awards
