This year over 600 Norfolk pupils are to compete in the county’s biggest school games competition hosted by Lynnsport, King’s Lynn and supported by Norfolk County Council on 9th November from 10am – 4pm. Now in its third year, The Norfolk School Sport Partnership Games will see pupils from Key Stages three and four, from the eight Norfolk School Partnerships, each one representing a cluster of high schools from all over Norfolk, competing against each other.
The pupils will take part in a variety of sports including badminton, football, hockey, netball, rugby, rowing and table tennis.
National Governing Bodies and local sports clubs from these sports have been invited to run tournaments in their respective sports and each event contributes points towards a Partnership’s overall score. The Governing Bodies also have the opportunity to scout for young talent while at the same time offering their sport to young people who may not have competed in that sport outside of a school environment.
Participation, social interaction and teamwork are highly encouraged and considered as important as excelling in sport. Last years winners were the Norwich School Sport Partnership, which is made up of City Academy Norwich, City of Norwich School, the Hewett School, Notre Dame High and Hethersett High School. Jon Osborne, Partnership Development Manager for Norwich School Sport Partnership said:
“Last year’s Games went really well for the Norwich team, we managed to win the overall title and we will be doing our best to repeat that success again this year! Our students really enjoy the event and returned to their schools really inspired to try to achieve their potential in sport.”
The Norfolk Partnership Games intends to in a partial way mirror the UK School Games on a regional level and allows Norfolk School Sport to be showcased with participants from all over Norfolk.
Every school in Norfolk benefits from being in one of 8 School Sport Partnerships (SSP) fully funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).These SSP’s are a major part of the Government’s PE Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP) National Strategy.
The Government’s Public Service Agreement 22 is to deliver a successful Olympic Games and Paralympic Games with a sustainable legacy and get more children and young people taking part in high quality PE and Sport. The Government is committed to increasing the numbers of 5 -16 year olds participating in at least two hours of high quality PE and sport in school per week. In addition, the Government wants more opportunities for 5-19 year olds to participate in a further 3 hours per week of sporting activities through attractive provision designed to stimulate and increase take-up and sustain participation.
Teams of School Sport Coordinators, which are based in the local high schools, have a funded release time of two days to support the development of PE and school sport within their own school and their cluster of feeder primary schools. They are responsible for increasing opportunities for pupils to take part in high quality out of school hour’s sports clubs, school competitions, leadership and volunteering roles within their schools and link pupils to high quality community sports clubs.
