EDP Golden Mile

The Eastern Daily Press is launching a simple, pioneering initiative supported by Premier Sport which could have a massive impact on health and tness levels amongst Norfolk’s school children.

The Golden Mile – a school walking, jogging or running project – aims to engage EVERY school and EVERY child across the county to walk, jog or run a total of 50 miles during the academic year, reducing the ongoing challenges of childhood obesity and increasing participation in a healthy activity.

The EDP Golden Mile is:

Suitable for ANY SCHOOL, of ANY SIZE, it ts round all other school activities and does not need time-managing by staff.

Children, staff and even parents can join in. Pupils of all abilities can participate, some walking round while they chat, others will jog or run. It is also an ideal health and tness scheme for pupils who do not enjoy participating in sport.

All takes place within the school or grounds. Some schools report behaviour has improved during break and lunch times and attendance levels have picked up when children participate in the Golden Mile.

A university study proves that across all year groups, children were able to run continuously for around twice the length of time after participating in the Golden Mile.

Normally, the Golden Mile would cost each class £60 to participate for the academic year. However, the EDP and Premier Sport are committed to giving Norfolk’s children a better future. Therefore, we are delighted to provide it FREE of charge for your schools!

Each school will receive:

· Secure online website for updating, comparing and viewing distance charts

· Recipe cards for every pupil, personalised by some of the world’s top footballers - Steven Gerrard, Thierry Henry,  Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Kelly Smith – all endorsed by the World Heart Federation

· Lessons plans for numeracy, ICT, science, literacy and art at Foundation and Key Stage 1 and 2 to use if required

· Certicate for EVERY CHILD, when they reach 10 miles (bronze), 25 miles (silver) and 50 miles (gold). Also certicates for most improved child and best achiever

· Email updates on the progress of your school and some star performing individuals.

Schools will be able to compare pupil progress, and compare class eorts with other classes, other schools and with the national average. Schools will also be able to keep parents informed of each child’s progress – all automatically through the website. It’s simple as all the work is done for you.

The EDP will follow progress of the scheme, and report back on the many bene-ts that schools, teachers and pupils are witnessing as the EDP Golden Mile becomes part of the healthy lifestyle fabric of the school.

Once again, there is no cost for your schools to be involved with the project. To sign up all you need to do is log on to than one minute. www.edp.golden-mile.org and use the promotional code edp1009 to receive your free packs.

“Anything that gets children walking, running and keeping physically t has to be good. When children exercise, they have much higher levels of concentration and do better work. I’m hoping to see lots of children who want to be active and who want to take physical activity into their future lives.”

Head Teacher Cath Mills - Great Ellingham and Rocklands Primary School

"I am pleased to endorse Premier Sport's Golden Mile initiative which aims to get more children and young people physically active. As we prepare to host the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, we must show that we are world class in the way we encourage people of all ages to be more active. I hope the Golden Mile will encourage many thousands of young people to get active and - just as important - to stay active, enabling them to lead healthy and fullling lives."

Secretary of State for Health Andy Burnham

“Running or walking regularly is not only good for young people’s health, it gives them more energy throughout the day and can inspire more to take up sport for life. If children learn to love being active as they grow up then they’re also more likely to take those good habits through to adulthood. Golden Mile is a fantastic idea. My congratulations to Premier Sport and the Eastern Daily Press for ensuring this scheme takes o- in the East of England, and I urge other regions to follow suit.”

Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Ben Bradshaw

“Congratulations to the EDP upon the EDP Golden Mile. Healthy living starts young and the EDP Golden Mile project is exactly what's needed.”

The Rt Hon Charles Clarke MP for Norwich South
