On Wednesday 9th December, Norfolk’s 8 School Sports Partnerships came together for the year 7&8, year 12&13 and Special Schools County Indoor Rowing Regatta Finals at UEA.
Run in partnership between Norfolk County Council’s Competition team and British Rowing over 100 children raced on 'ergos' aka indoor rowing machines against British Rowing Gold Medal Targets. Linked up to a virtual lake projected onto the wall, the 1st competition got underway amist a series of cheering, shouting and encouragement from competitors and spectators alike.
With the Year 7 Boys on 1st any pre race nerves were soon forgotten as the site of the partnership boats on the virtual lake lay waiting…Ready, Attension, Row signalled the start of the race.
Senior Competition Manager, Roger Sweet was on fine form as race commentator for the day as Norwich East came away with the trophy for Y7&8 winners.
With Norwich Rowing Club on hand to provide expertise on rowing technique throughout the day, an enjoyable day was spent by all on the virtual lake.
Stuart Brunton-Douglas, Competition Manager highlighted,
‘’It was great to have 4 special schools take part today. Congratulations must go to Fredrick Nicholson School who won the special schools competition, followed by Sidestrand Hall, the Claire School and John Grant.
Today just goes to show the rewards and enjoyment children of all abilities can gain and achieve from competing in sport. School Sport competition is an excellent way for schools to achieve the Every Child Matters Outcomes and ensure children stay healthy, enjoy and achieve.’’
The day was concluded with the Y12/Y13 Competition where partnerships were vying for the Mike Arnold Trophy. Presented by Ian Arnold, son of Mike, congratulations go to Norwich East who just picked Breckland and East Norfolk as the overall winners.
