Playground to Podium Opportunity

The UEA Sportspark on the 12th March 2010

The John Grant School Caister on the 26th March 2010

This will be an opportunity for your students to come along and sample 5 Paralympic sports – athletics, wheelchair basketball, boccia, football and table-tennis and also to try their hand at some cricket skills. Schools and students can choose which of these two events is the most convenient for them to attend and indicate on the enclosed entry form.

This day is open to those students who fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • Amputees
  • Wheelchair users
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spina bifida
  • Visually impaired
  • Hearing impaired

Please find enclosed a copy of this letter which we would be grateful if you would pass on to the Head of PE and discuss with them any students you feel would be suitable for such an event.

Each sport will be organised into 30 minute slots and will be run by qualified coaches representing the appropriate National Governing Body.  Students will be divided into five groups according to their disability and will carousel around the sports.  During the day the coaches will be carrying out talent identification.  Following the day, students who have been identified will be notified and informed of the follow-up events which will take place during the summer term.  However, at this stage we are encouraging all students to come along and take part in what we hope will be a very enjoyable and inclusive day of sport.

The day will begin at 10.00 with students arriving for registration.  At 10.30 there will be a general warm-up session for everybody and at 10.45 the first sport session will begin.  The day will finish at 3.00.

Students, accompanying staff/parents/carers will need to bring a packed lunch and drink (tea and coffee will be available throughout the day for accompanying adults).  Football and athletics will take place outside with the other sports being indoors.  Students will need to bring appropriate footwear and clothing for all the sports.

If you have any students who would like to take part in this exciting opportunity please complete the enclosed entry form and return by 26th February at the latest.

There will be an official photographer present during the day.  We would be grateful if you would obtain parental permission for photographs to be taken.  If any student is not able to be photographed could you please make us aware of this at registration.

If you have any queries relating to this event please do not hesitate to contact us, particularly if you are unsure whether a student would be suitable to attend.
