Funding and support opportunities

  • Gifted and Talented Out of School Hours Funding For Transition 2010: In response to the recent changes to the Gifted and Talented programme and the requirement for schools to take responsibility for providing opportunities for pupils to participate in enrichment activities, funding is available for clusters of schools to develop specific G&T activities for transition. There is only a limited amount of funding available, approximately £1500 per School Sport Partnership cluster of schools.
  • Development of Classroom Quality Standards and research: Some funding is available for individual teachers, schools or clusters interested in developing these areas (generic or subject specific) over the summer term 2010.

If you are interested in either of the above, please contact: sandra.howard@norfolk.gov.uk

  • Talented athlete funding: Support is still available for talented athletes through Sports-Aid (please contact Claire Burrows on 01603 697000) and Celebrating Talent: Rising Stars.  For information please visit www.norfolkcelebratingtalent.co.uk
  • Athletics Coach for G&T students:  Hethersett High School have been working with Ron Marsh, an athletics coach, providing coaching sessions for talented athletes.  Ron has offered his services free of charge for any Norfolk school wishing to further cater for their performance pupils in athletics.  Ron can be contacted on 01379 890819  or at coachron@supanet.com
  • UEA Sportspark:  Just a reminder that the UEA Sportspark athletics track can be booked for free (curriculum time only) by Norfolk schools.  The track has to be pre-booked by contacting Maria Rowe on 01603 593645

National Information

Norfolk recognition:  Norfolk and Framingham Earl High School have been invited by the Youth Sport Trust to join a small team of Sports Colleges, in a pilot phase at first, to develop and lead the provision of world leading G&T support to young people in England.  The Competitive Edge scheme has also been recognised by London 2012 as a best practice case study.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families has recently reviewed its national programme for G&T pupils and is now in the process of scaling back to align provision more closely with wider developments in personalised learning. As a result, schools will be expected to do more themselves for these pupils.

The 21st Century Schools White Paper published in 2009 Schools for the 21st Century. To enable the paper to become an Act of Parliament before it was dissolved prior to the May 2010 election it was revised in agreement with all parties. As a result all reference to pupil and parent guarantees were removed.

Young, Gifted &Talented website closed on 12th February the content is currently being checked and much of it will then be migrated to the National Strategies website http://nationalstrategies.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/. The G&T site contains lots of useful information, including a G&T Forum you can register for.

The Dare2Dream website is soon to be live, and schools will be able to view the site at www.sportingambassadors.co.uk
