Commonwealth Games Hockey Festival Success

Wednesday 23rd March saw 150 pupils from South Norfolk SSP primary schools take part in our year 3-4 Hockey Festival at Harleston Magpies Hockey Club.

A short briefing regarding the rules, format of the day and most importantly our Spirit of the Games campaign. All pupils were ready and eager to go from the outset and it was clear that all teams were well prepared, organised and confident.

The morning saw the children take part in 5 hockey activities. These activities were designed to help the children understand the basic skills needed to play hockey and start to understand the basic rules. There were lots of smiling faces which showed that the children were enjoying the activities.

Pupils stated

"It was really good, being with friends and learning to try our best and have a new experience".

"I really want to play again".

In the afternoon schools put the skills they had learnt in the morning carousel into practice. Each school team was placed in a pool of 4 teams with all teams playing each other in their group. This year’s tournament intent was on developing character and life skills. Our aim was to change the focus of the competition and empower young people to develop their understanding of the School Games Values. Schools looked out for pupils in their team who displayed the School Games Value ‘Determination and Self Belief’ and these pupils were celebrated at the end of the event.

Congratulations to all pupils who participated in the tournament, coaches and teachers who helped make the festival go so well and a fun day for all involved. Special mention to Wicklewood Primary who came in their Commonwealth Games Country colours and even made flags to support their team members.

Many thanks to Harleston Magpies Hockey Club for the use of their pitches, facilities and also providng pupils with a small mememto of their experience. A massive thank you to the leaders from Archbishop Sancroft High School and Langley School leaders for running the skills sessions and umpiring the afternoon games.

Teacher feedback from the event:

"It has been a great event to teach the children about team values, sportsmanship as well as learning hockey skills."

If your pupils enjoyed the event and would like to continue playing hockey regularly here are some further opportunities:
