Winning return to athletics competition

The fantastic athletics facilities at UEA Sportspark once again played host to the South Norfolk SSP secondary athletics competition after a short break. 7 South Norfolk secondary schools competed in the competition held on Thursday 8th June.

The athletics event is a team-based competition with pupils competing in 100m sprint, 200m sprint, 300m, 400m, 800m or 1500m track events. In the field they took part in Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump, Discus, Shot Put and Javelin. To end the event, we held 4 x 100m relays for all age groups. Individual performances are scored using points and the winners are the team with the highest cumulative points score so it is important that every athlete puts in their very best performance in each event.

The winners of this year’s event were Wymondham College Runners Up were Wymondham High Academy with Diss High School very close behind in third place.

There were also some great individual performances on the day. Our special ‘Spirit of the Games’ Award which is to support the work being done in schools to encourage children to think about the lessons that can be learned through sport and the importance of the values such as respect, determination, teamwork, honesty, passion and self-belief, not only in sport but everyday life. The ‘Teamwork’ award was awarded to 4 pupils from each of the 7 schools.

Laura Goodswen, School Games Organiser said,

“It was great to be back holding this event again as it has always been a popular competition with schools and pupils who love competing at the track and getting to use such amazing facilities. We had a great atmosphere for the running events, especially during the relays which spurs the pupils on.

There were some excellent performances on the day so congratulations to all winners and well done to everyone who took part.

As always, a big thanks to the staff and volunteers on the day who helped run the events and scored, they did a great job, and we couldn’t run the event without them”.
