Inspired by the success of the lionesses this summer girl’s football has seen a real growth in popularity in secondary schools this autumn term with more girls than ever, attending weekly extracurricular clubs.
To meet the demand for more opportunities for girls to play football in schools South Norfolk SSP recently organised a year 9-10 #LetGirlsPlay football event which was hosted at Long Stratton Leisure Centre which involved 100 Girls and 9 school teams from Wymondham College, Wymondham High School, Hobart High School, Diss High School, and Long Stratton High School.
The teams of year 9/10 pupils from across South Norfolk School Sport Partnership were split into two groups for the competition (Year 9 and Year 10) where they each played each other in a round robin format. There was lots of great teamwork on display as well as some fine individual skill and all the matches were played in great spirit, with lots of cheering and encouragement from the side-lines.
At the end of the group matches there were play off matches for every team to determine their overall finishing position in the competition.
Results Year 9:
Results Year 10:
As well as medals for the winners all teams received certificates and there was a ‘Spirit of the Games Award’ which was presented to the team from Diss High School Year 10 Team for trying their best, encouraging others, giving 100% all the time.
Massive thanks to the referees from Easton College who helped run the event.
South Norfolk School Sport Partnership is part of a nationwide scheme that aims to provide opportunities in school for girls with the vision to ensure every girl has equal access to football in school by 2024.
