Year 7 Girls Come and Try Rugby Festival!!

Thursday 23rd November, we held our year 7 girls come and try rugby event at Wymondham Rugby Club. 42 girls took part in the event from 3 secondary schools Long Stratton, Hobart, and Wymondham College.

After a quick briefing on what was going to happened throughout the day Kimberley (Wymondham Rugby Club coach) split the girls into 5 mixed school teams. These pupils worked together throughout the morning taking on 10 different rugby skills stations. These activities were designed to help the pupils understand the basic skills needed to play rugby, start to understand the basic rules and make new friendships with people they hadn’t played with before. Once complete the pupils were then asked if they would like to work on their tackling/ contact skills after a resounding “yes” all pupils showed off their great tackling skills. There were lots of smiling faces and laughter throughout the challenges. In the afternoon schools took part in a mixed team round robin festival with all teams playing each other in their group. After deciding team names the groups worked together with the leaders to play touch rugby games.

School teachers in attendance throughout the day looked out for pupils in their team who displayed the School Games Value ‘Determination’ and 6 pupils were celebrated and awarded certificates at the end of the event. At this event we also awarded 5 pupils with Spirit of the Games awards. This award recognised those pupils who had shown great sportsmanship and demonstrated the sporting values helping their teams. The sports leaders picked 1 pupil from each team who they thought this award should go to and these pupils received School Games T-shirts.

A massive thank you to the 16 leaders from Wymondham College who ran the activities and refereed throughout the day. The sports leaders did an incredible job, they showed great maturity and initiative and undertook their roles with growing confidence throughout the day, we were delighted with them.

A massive thank you also goes to Kimberley Fearn who helped organise and run the day. A big thank you to Wymondham Rugby Club for hosting this event and letting us use your fantastic facilities. It was great to see so many pupils enjoying the game of rugby today and getting the opportunity to take part at a big club such as Wymondham RUFC.
