Year 3-6 Girls Football Tournament

Tuesday 23rd November saw 150 girls from South Norfolk SSP primary schools battle it out at Goals, Norwich in the Year 3-6 Girls Football tournament.

A short briefing regarding the rules, format of the day and most importantly our Spirit of the Games campaign. All teams were ready and eager to go from the outset and it was clear that all teams were well prepared, organised on the pitch and confident.

The year 5-6 tournament consisted of 2 pools with teams playing a group round robin. Teams finishing in the corresponding places then played one final match against each other. The final was between two strong teams, Thurton Primary and Wicklewood Primary who had topped their groups. The final was closely contested with Thurton Primary narrowly winning the event.

The year 3-4 tournament consisted of 2 pools playing a group round robin. After a quick break team finishing in first and second formed a round robin group with teams finishing in third and fourth forming a round robin group. All teams then played another 3 round robin matches. This year’s winner of the year 3-4 tournament was Loddon Tigers.

Spirit of the Games Campaign:

This year’s tournament intent was on developing character and life skills. Our aim was to change the focus of the competition and empower young people to develop their understanding of the School Games Values. All teams were tasked with reviewing their opponents on all 6 of the School Games Values they displayed throughout the matches. The winners of the most Spirited Team of the Day year 3-4 was Pulham Primary and year 5-6 Morley Primary School.

Congratulations to all players who participated in the tournament, coaches and teachers who helped make the competition go so well and a fun day for all involved. Special thanks to Goals, Norwich for the use of their pitches and facilities. A massive thank you to the leaders from Easton College for refereeing, scoring and time keeping.

If your pupils enjoyed the event and would like to continue playing football regularly here are some further opportunities:

SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Centres from The FA will provide Norfolk girls aged 5-11 with regular opportunities to play football. The initiative offers organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls. SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football sessions take place on a weekly basis, either after school or at weekends, and provide a safe environment where girls can try football for the first time. SSE and The FA hope the initiative will inspire participants to engage with football, meet new friends, develop fundamental skills, learn new things and create the foundation for a lifelong love of football. If you would like any further information on where the SSE Wildcats Centres are please contact Harry Diggens via email [email protected]
