60 Active Minutes in School

What is my school's responsibility?

The Government Childhood Obestiy plan has set out the ambition for all children to achieve 60 minutes of physical activity every day, with schools being responsible for delivering 30 of these active minutes.

At least 30 minutes should be delivered in school every day through active break times, PE, Extra-currciular clubs, active lessons, or other sport and physical activity event with the remaining 30 minutes supported by parent and carerr outside of school time.

Remember this MUST be a whole school approach.

What are my responsibiites as a PE Lead?

  • To raise awareness to the school staff and governing body of your joint responsibilities regarding making sure ALL pupils are active for 30 minutes every day.
  • Signpost staff to the resources and training available to support them in making the school day more active.
  • Know how active pupils are within your school and identify any classes that may need additional support.
  • Encourage and support your school staff to make small changes to increase physical activity levels in your school.

How to become an Active School

The first step to becoming an Active School is to track physical activity levels in pupils so you can then put in place interventions in order to improve them. This can be done using the Active School Planner or Koboca surveys.

Increasing pupils physical activity levels in your school

There are many ways that you can make your school day more active:

  • Active Travel – Help pupils arrive at school energised and ready to learn with active travel. Its a great way to improve health, cut pollutions and reduce traffic at the school gate. There are plenty of ways to encourage active travel, from promoting it on your school website to running travel challenges.
  • Active Classrooms – There are plenty of ways to energise your classroom while delivering the core curriculum. Build physical activity into your lessons such as Maths and English can have huge benefits.
  • Active Breaks – Encourage physical activity through structured, safe and fun activities. Active Breaks encourage pupils to be active in their free time.
  • Active Clubs – Specific clubs aimed at increasing targeted pupils physical activity levels.
